5,906. That is the number of bridges found to be structurally deficient in Pennsylvania. That is the highest number of structurally deficient bridges in any one state in this country. That is a problem that needs to be fixed.
According to a new study more than one in four Pennsylvania bridges is deficient and needs to be repaired or replaced. Yet, repair and replacement is expensive. Experts believe that billions of dollars are needed to do the necessary work.
The problem is that if any of these bridges give way, the results can be catastrophic. I believe, as an auto accident attorney, Pennsylvania needs to do more to protect travelers from the potentially serious, or fatal, effects of a bridge collapse before it is too late. It is hard enough to stay safe on our roads because of the negligence of other drivers. We must be careful not to let deterioration of bridges and other roads compound the problem and increase the likelihood of injury.
