Driving while school buses are out on the roads requires attention and a certain amount of patience. School buses stop often to pick up or drop off children and when they do so Pennsylvania law requires traffic to stop.
However, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reports that approximately 1,000 people are ticketed each year for failing to stop for a school bus that has its red lights on and its stop sign down. These tickets carry with them a $250 fine, a 60 day license suspension and 5 points on your license.
The consequences of the ticket are harsh, but not nearly as harsh as hurting a child or ending a young life. Thus, when school buses are on the road it is critically important to put down your cell phone and your cup of coffee, to table the disagreement you’re having with your passenger, and to slow down. Concentrate on driving safely and obeying the Pennsylvania school bus stop sign rules – you’ll protect yourself and the children.
