Are Your Kids Safer Driving with You or Their Grandparents?

A recent study suggests that kids may be safer when they drive with their grandparents rather than their parents. Yes, really. Even the researchers who conducted the study, including Dr. Fred Henretig of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, were surprised.

While it is generally thought that older drivers have more accidents, researchers found that children suffered 50% fewer car accident injuries when they were passengers in their grandparents cars. The study was published in a recent issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Researchers can’t say definitively why children are safer when their grandparents are driving though some suggest that grandparents may be extra careful with grandchildren in the car and less likely to be in a hurry than parents.

As a lawyer for accident victims, I find this study fascinating. What do you think?
