While Pennsylvania State Police may use radar to catch speeders, local police are not afforded the same opportunity in Pennsylvania.  In fact, Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that does not permit local police officers to use radar, according to a local newspaper.*

That doesn’t make much sense.

As Pennsylvania car accident lawyers, we know that the majority of speeding accidents and fatalities occur on non-interstate roads and that local police have a difficult time preventing speeding without the use of radar.

There is currently a bill in the Pennsylvania state legislature that, if passed, would allow municipal police in some of the Commonwealth’s larger counties to use radar.  Those who support the bill claim that the increased use of radar will reduce speeding and thereby save lives.  Those opposed argue that local police will use radar to catch speeders as a money making scheme.
