Governor Rendell Proposes Cameras to Catch Uninsured Drivers

Last week, the Patriot News announced Governor Rendell’s idea to use highway cameras to catch drive’s who are driving without insurance.  Governor Rendell is proposing that cameras be placed along the roads or on overhead signs to photograph license plates.  The license plate number could then be compared against an insurance database to determine if the driver has insurance.

Not surprisingly, there are many who oppose this idea including civil liberties groups and insurance officials.  Some believe that the cameras are an invasion of privacy and that the fines will hit the poorest drivers in Pennsylvania who cannot afford to purchase car insurance in the first place.  It is expected that if cameras were put throughout the state as much as $120 million in revenue could be raised.

Additionally, Governor Rendell cites using the technology to keep Pennsylvania motorists safe from uninsured drivers.  The State House is said to be reviewing the proposed legislation.

What do you think about Governor Rendell’s proposed legislation?  Is it a good idea or is it unfair?
