Different Slogan but Same Message

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Last Friday, a new national crackdown on drunk driving started and will continue through Labor Day Weekend.  The crackdown has a new slogan, “Driver Sober, or Get Pulled Over” but the message remains the same.

No matter what slogan is used, the message is not to drink and drive.  Driving while under the influence of alcohol is a deadly danger that is avoidable. In 2008, 492 people died in Pennsylvania drunk driving accidents.

So, no matter what you call it, no matter what slogan you use to help yourself remember to avoid drinking and driving, our accident and injury attorneys urge you to protect yourself and others by refusing to drink and drive during this national crackdown and at all other times.

What Happens if You are in a Crash with a Pennsylvania Horse and Buggy

Friday, June 24th, 2011

There is so much that is unique about Pennsylvania.  One of those things is the way that buggies and motor vehicles share the road in a manner not seen in other parts of the country.  Most of the time buggies and motor vehicles are able to coexist peacefully because both types of drivers are required to follow similar rules of the road.

For example, it is against the law for both a motor vehicle driver and a buggy driver to drink and drive.  Just last week, two buggy drivers were arrested for DUI after they drove their buggy into the path of a car in Western Pennsylvania.  Only the horse was injured in that crash and the horse is expected to survive.

If you have been in an accident with a horse and buggy then you may have legal rights to a potential recovery depending on the circumstances of the case.  For more information, please contact a PA auto accident lawyer for a free consultation.

Drunk Driving Doesn’t Just Apply to Motorists in Pennsylvania

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Earlier this month, North Middletown Township Police arrested a 23 year old man for driving under the influence.  That is, for driving his bicycle under the influence of alcohol. Police report that the bike rider’s blood alcohol content was 0.30, well above the legal limit of 0.08.

The biker was arrested for driving under the influence, resisting arrest and public drunkenness.  Bail was set at $65,000.

This arrest highlights the dangers of alcohol and driving any type of vehicle.  As a lawyer for accident victims and a son and a friend who has seen the horrors of drunk driving accidents, I applaud the efforts of the local police in keeping the streets of our Commonwealth free from the dangers of drunk driving.

PA State Police Report Record Number of DUI Arrests in 2010

Monday, April 25th, 2011

For the ninth straight year, the Pennsylvania State Police have set a record.  In 2010, the State Police arrested 17,695 people for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).  That is more drunk driving arrests than the State Police have ever made in one year and a 5% increase over 2009 arrest statistics. These numbers do not include any arrests made by local police in Pennsylvania.

As a Reading personal injury attorney, I find this trend of increasing DUI arrests interesting.  Some of these arrests occur before an accident and may prevent serious injuries.  The increase in the numbers also sends a message to motorists that the State Police are cracking down on drunk driving and that it is a danger which is not permitted in this state.

Of course, it is up to motorists, and not the police to prevent drunk driving.  The police cannot prevent all DUI accidents.  If you have been hurt, or if you have lost a loved one, in a Pennsylvania drunk driving accident, please contact me today for a free consultation about your legal rights.

What You Need to Know About Pennsylvania Highway Deaths During 2010

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

The numbers are in.  The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has released information about the number of people who died on state highways during 2010.  Statewide, the number of fatal crashes increased to 1,324.

Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Alcohol related deaths rose from 442 in 2009 to 444 in 2010.
  • Speed related deaths rose from 231 in 2009 to 248 in 2010.
  • Aggressive driving related deaths rose from 130 in 2009 to 168 in 2010.
  • Motorcycle deaths rose from 204 in 2009 to 223 in 2010.
  • Bicyclist deaths rose from 16 in 2009 to 21 in 2010.
  • Deaths in accidents with 16 and 17 drivers rose from 40 in 2009 to 57 in 2010.

We extend our condolences to all of the families who lost loved ones in Pennsylvania crashes during 2010 and our Pennsylvania car accident lawyers hope that the statistics collected the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are used to increase safety on Commonwealth roadways during 2011.
