Liver Transplant Surgery Related to Hydroxycut Use
Hydroxycut dietary supplements have recently been recalled.
The recall comes as a result of an FDA issued warning to stop taking Hydroxycut products. There have been serious health problems related to the use of Hydroxycut dietary supplements including at least one death. The reports of injury include serious concerns such as cardiovascular problems, seizures, rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage) and liver damage. Some patients had such extreme liver damage that they required a liver transplant.
Liver transplant surgery is a serious type of surgery involving transplanting the liver organ. The liver provides many functions in the body. Some of the most important functions include filtering toxins from the body and blood. Another important job that the liver performs is to produce a substance called bile. The bile is needed by the intestines to help with the absorption of vitamins E, K, D and A in the body. The liver is the largest solid organ of the body. It is located just above the intestines in the abdomen.
When the liver becomes damaged it does not perform as it should. The damage from Hydroxycut to the liver can be slight to severe. The people who suffered liver damage due to Hydroxycut use were taking the products as directed according to the package directions. Liver damage can take a long time to advance or can be acute, happening almost at once. The symptoms of liver damage include jaundice, fatigue, easy bruises and dark urine. Advanced liver disease can cause the patient to suffer a coma with eventual death unless a liver transplant is performed.
The liver toxicity was found to be directly caused by the consumption of Hydroxycut.
When Hydroxycut use was discontinued some patients found that their liver was able to recover. The amount of Hydroxycut taken had no apparent affect on the severity of the liver damage. Also, the length of time that the patient had taken Hydroxycut seemed to have no relationship to the liver damage suffered. Further, the patients that suffered acute liver damage and required a liver transplant were not predisposed to the illness genetically or because of any other reasons. The use of Hydroxycut alone caused the liver damage.
The liver transplant operation itself is complex. The patient is on a waiting list and must be ready for s urgery at any time. When a matching liver becomes available the patient will immediately be called to surgery. A surgical team does the surgery. The old liver is removed keeping the veins in place for reconnection. Then the new liver is put in and reconnected to all the veins. During surgery a special tube is installed to remove bile and toxins from the body. Once the surgery is complete the recovery process begins. The first few days and weeks are critical since the body must accept the new liver. Then the liver must be functioning properly. The patient will likely be in the hospital for up to a few months and will recover at home for several more months.
