May 1, 2009 FDA Hydroxycut Recall
The FDA issued a warning to consumers concerning Hydroxycut dietary supplement products.
The warning comes after the reports of serious health problems and death after consumers had used the popular weight loss
supplement. Hydroxycut dietary supplement products have been recalled. The recall includes 14 Hydroxycut
products. Anyone who has been taking Hydroxycut is warned to immediately stop taking the supplement.
Hydroxycut has been a popular weight loss aid since its introduction in 2002. In 2004, Hydroxycut products were reformulated after ephedra, one of the ingredients in the original formula, was pulled from the market. The Hydroxycut products have gone on to become the number one selling weight loss supplements in America. People have used Hydroxycut products to help control appetite, lose weight and increase energy for more than five years.
Hydroxycut touts the use of natural and herbal ingredients, making it sound safe to use. However, the use of herbal and natural substances doesn’t automatically make a product safe for consumption. The FDA is currently checking into the specific ingredients in Hydroxycut products that are at the cause of the health issues. The FDA does not regulate dietary supplements and is only in charge of foods and drugs. The FDA became involved in the warning after the reports of injury.
The nature of the health problems related to the Hydroxycut recall include cardiovascular problems that ranged from heart palpitations to heart attack; seizures; rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage) that can lead to kidney failure; and liver toxicity that can cause severe liver damage. There has been one death attributed to taking Hydroxycut. This death came after severe liver damage was diagnosed and the patient was waiting for a liver transplant.
The May 1, 2009 FDA Hydroxycut recall should be cause for alarm in anyone who has been taking Hydroxycut
— or who has taken it in the past. It is not known of some of the health problems the public is experiencing are a result of long-term use of a Hydroxycut product, or if they occurred after just short-term use. It is clear that the people who got sick did not misuse the product. They had taken the product according to package instructions and did not overuse Hydroxycut.
